Are you Speaking Life…

into your children?

Author: Saleama A. Ruvalcaba, MATS

About ten years ago I was reading an autobiography by entrepreneur Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics. She shared in her book how when she was a child her mother depended on her a lot. Her mom worked long hours. Her dad was too ill to care for the family. Her mother always left instructions for Mary Kay to cook dinner and clean. Her mother would call her on the phone when Mary Kay got home from school to explain the cooking instructions. Mary Kay said her mother would always tell her, “You can do it!”

Mary Kay said she grew up believing those words from her mother. She believed in herself because her mother told her she could do it. She believed she could accomplish whatever she tried to do. She credits her mother for making her believe in herself. At the time of Mary Kay’s death in 2001, she had a fortune of 98 million dollars with Mary Kay Cosmetics sales at 1.2 billion dollars. I am not surprised that Mary Kay founded a billion-dollar corporation. We’d be surprised by what we can accomplish in life when we “believe” we can do it.

That story in Mary Kay’s book had an amazing impact on me. I did not grow up with any affirmation from authority. In fact, I was made fun of regularly by my parents and other family members for asking too many questions, for not knowing how to write well, for dressing funny – and so on. Because I did not not have affirmation as a child, I vowed that my children would grow up believing in themselves. Since reading Mary Kay’s book ten years ago, I tell my children often that they can do it! I have seen so many times how they accomplish very small things when I tell them they can do it. My prayer is that they will always remember they can do a lot if they believe in themselves. Those small accomplishments might one day lead to greatness.

The Power of Words

Do you believe in the power of words?

Just yesterday I was outside with my 8-year-old. She was attempting to go across the monkey bars when she said she couldn’t do it. I told her yes, you can do it. She tried a few times and fell. She kept trying and eventually went across. After only a few moments she was going across the monkey bars with ease. I didn’t help her at all. I just sat there and told her she could do it and eventually she did.

Do you believe in the power of your words to your children?

Do you speak life into them?

Do they know they can accomplish their daily schoolwork even though it might be hard?

If they play sports, do they know with practice and hard work they can be successful at it?

Do your children believe they are smart because you tell them they are smart?

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Speak life into your children. Speak life to yourself!

The power of your words can help your children accomplish amazing things for God!
