Homeschooling and Critical Thinking

Are You Teaching Your Homeschooler…

…About the Media?

Author: Saleama A. Ruvalcaba, MATS

Me and my husband own and operate a nonprofit homeschool physical education business teaching classes to students. One of the ways we advertise our class is through videos we create about class. We film class with our phones, then we use an editor to edit the videos together to make one short video of class.

Here’s the thing…as the “editor”, I get to make the videos “say” exactly what I want it to say. Whatever I want the audience to believe about our class – I simply edit the video in such a way. It’s not to say I am doing something wrong – I’m not. But the point is, if I want to show that our classes are big, I only add videos to the final video showing a lot of students. If I want to show that students are all happy, I only add videos to the final video of students laughing. It doesn’t mean during class there weren’t some students who were unhappy. However, as the editor – I can pick and choose what I want YOU to see.

This is how media works. The author, editor, behind whatever YOU are looking at creates a story and or video to make YOU believe whatever THEY WANT YOU TO BELIEVE! And the sad sad part about life today is we believe everything in the media  Рas truth -simply because we do not have the capability to critically think about what we are watching.

Home Educators – You Can Help

I am sorry to say this, but media is nothing more than a “god” today that we worship.

It’s no secret that right now in our nation we are dealing with an election issue. Just the other day, a person made a comment on a post related to evidence of fraud. The person said these words; “I just looked this up and not one mainstream publication has an article about this so it’s not true.”

Sadly – that is the psyche of our thinking today.

If it’s not on the news (the mainstream media) then it’s not true.

We are raising a culture of people who cannot think for themselves. Rather, they rely on what the media tells them. And if the media tells them a lie – they believe it.

Research – A Lost Art

We need to people who research what we are being told.

We need to be people who can look at every situation with an open mind.

When we read the Bible and understand the teachings of Jesus He reminds us of the narrow gate.

Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow is the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

Yes, in this verse, Jesus is referring to Himself. Many people will walk the road of destruction by refusing to acknowledge Him as the path to life. In the same way, many people walk through the broad media gate. Followers of Christ are ridiculed for being “crazy Christians.” At the same time, those of us who question the media are called conspiracy theorists.

Sorry, well, not sorry – but we should not believe EVERYTHING we are told by the media simply because the media says it. We have so much information around us and we need to be free thinkers.

We need to ask questions.

We need to talk to other people.

I am not suggesting we never believe anything the media says.

But we cannot be people who DO NOT think!

We cannot raise our homeschoolers to not think. We have such an opportunity as home educators to help our children process information with an open mind.

We have become people who are in such a rush we do not take the time to learn and research. We stare at our phones all day giving no thought to what we are being told.

It’s sad on every level!

Luke 24:45 “Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.”

Jesus opened His disciples minds to understanding the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit does the same thing for us when we ask Him. God gives us wisdom when we study His word and when we pray to Him.

When we hear the same lie over and over we believe it. Jesus is truth – and the way. He will lead us to understanding and truth when we ask Him.

It’s Okay to Discuss Current Events

It’s okay to discuss current events with your children. They need to know what is going on in our American history. But neither you nor they can become blinded to the media.

If you are watching information on the media on a regular basis, ask God to help you see what you’re watching from His perspective. If something doesn’t make sense, ask God to lead you to understanding. Ask God to give you peace over what you’re watching. If you don’t have peace, ask God to lead you to the truth by researching and learning more about what you’re trying to understand.

God is not the author of confusion:

1: Corinthians 14:33 “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”

He will give you understanding if you ask Him!

“Teach me above all, blessed Son of the Father, the revelation of the Father that gives confidence in prayer.” ~ Andrew Murray

Enjoy the homeschool journey!

Pray to God for revelation. He will give it to you.

Jesus is truth. Trust Him before you trust the media!
